I have been involved in the creation and maintenance of Bicester Community Wellbeing Garden for over seven years working with people of all ages and abilities.The work is mostly done in small groups whether it is our regular volunteers who come to the weekly meetings or the dozen primary school children with a couple of teachers that come fortnightly during term time. Though all the planning and work is shared between the regular volunteers according to their ability I usually lead the sessions with young children both the primary school children and the Scout troup that come to help a couple of times a year. With the Scouts the groups are usually larger but their leaders ensure the children are respectful of the garden and the nature we like to encourage within the garden through the variety of planting and avoidance of the use of harmful chemicals. I do not have formal any training in childcare or in gardening but enjoy sharing the experience of gardening with others. I share what I have learned from working in my own garden, the allotment I share with some friends and the community orchard I also volunteer on in another part of Bicester. I greatly benefit in what I learn from the other volunteers working alongside me in all of these cultivation sites and hope others benefit from what they learn from me too.
